When should I start using data logging?

After 3-5 track days, once you're consistent and comfortable. Before that, you need to develop feel and confidence — data will just overwhelm you. Start with lap times and sector splits, not full telemetry.

What's the cheapest useful data logger?

RaceChrono Pro ($20 app) with a 10Hz external GPS receiver ($80-150). Total cost under $200 and gives you lap times, sector splits, speed traces, and GPS line overlay. Phone GPS alone (1Hz) is too slow for real analysis.

What should I look at first in my data?

Sector splits — compare your best sector times to your average. The sector with the biggest gap between best and average is where the most time is. Then look at the speed trace in that sector to see where you're losing it.

Is an AIM Solo worth it?

If you track regularly (6+ days/year) and want standalone reliability without phone battery/heat issues, yes. The Solo 2 DL ($500-700) is the gold standard for club racers. For occasional track days, RaceChrono is plenty.

Can data tell me what I'm doing wrong?

It tells you where and how much, but not why. 'You braked 10 meters early in Turn 3' is data. 'Because your eyes were fixed on the apex instead of the exit' requires a coach watching you. Data + coaching together is the real unlock.
