How many laps does it take to learn a new track?

With a method: 10-15 laps to be comfortable, 30-50 to be fast. Without a method: some drivers never fully learn a track because they skip the slow foundational laps. A coach can get you to 95% pace in under 10 laps.

Should I use a sim to learn a track before going?

Yes — but only for direction and flow. Sim braking points and grip levels don't transfer exactly. Use it to learn 'left, right, long right, hairpin' so your first real laps aren't spent figuring out which way the track goes.

Should I follow faster cars to learn the line?

No. Faster cars pull you into corners at speeds you're not ready for. They also might be running a line that doesn't work for your car or skill level. Learn your own reference points first, then compare.

What are reference points and why do they matter?

Fixed visual markers (signs, curbs, cracks) that tell you where to brake, turn, and accelerate. They make your driving repeatable — instead of guessing by feel each lap, you hit the same marks and get consistent results.

How do I know which corners matter most?

The corners before the longest straights. A good exit onto a straight gains you speed for the entire length of it. A bad exit costs you everywhere. Prioritize those corners first.
